The Scranton city council at its regular meeting Aug. 8 unanimously approved a new contract with the Greene County sheriff’s office for law enforcement.
The current contract was set to expire Aug. 10.
There was considerable discussion at the council’s July meeting about not approving the new contract, with some residents, including mayor Randy Winkelman, expressing discontent with the services they were getting. There was talk of reinstating a Scranton police department or contracting with a different department.
The new contract is the same as the sheriff’s office contract with other towns in the county. It does not include animal control and it does not specify the times of day deputies will be in Scranton.
Winkelman said Tuesday he had contacted the Jefferson police department about contracting services. JPD chief Mark Clouse said his department does not have enough officers to provide services for another town. (The Scranton Journal contributed to this post.)
